Led by Vancouver based composer\, singer\, and Oud player Alaaeldin Abdalla\, the group creates music that carries deep cultural roots while opening space for connection\, reflection\, and celebration. \nAlaaeldin’s compositions draw on traditional Sudanese Arabic structure and the words of contemporary Sudanese poets. Together with Western instrumentation\, Sudanda creates a rich sound tapestry that feels soulful\, alive\, and welcoming. After leaving Sudan during a time of violence\, repression\, and abuse of human rights\, Alaaeldin continued his musical journey through Libya and Cairo before making Vancouver his home. \nThe music of Sudanda is carefully fused with the sounds of Earle Peach on acoustic guitar and vocals\, Jane Kalmakoff on accordion and vocals\, James Griffiths on trumpet\, Riv Lai on bass\, and Wesley Skakun on percussion. Together\, we’ll reflect on how a new geography reshapes poetic expression\, the role of one’s mother tongue and second language in literary creation\, and the emotional landscapes of nostalgia\, exile\, loneliness\, and belonging. \nHosted by Fatemeh Rahimi\, the evening features poet\, writer\, and psychoanalyst Hossein Haji Ghafari\, who will lead a conversation on the relationship between poetry and the inner world.
