Shashwati comes from a family of musicians\, with her maternal grandfather being employed in the court of Gwalior. She has studied khayal in the Gwalior style extensively with her mother\, Smt. In addition\, Shashwati has studied thumri\, dhrupad\, ghazal\, along with the repertoire of other gharanas such as Jaipur-Atrauli. She has received much acclaim as a performer and guru\, boasting an international array of concerts and presentations\, and has become one of the foremost exponents of tappa singing.
