Our final event of the year features erudite and creative Hindustani classical vocalist Shashwati Mandal in concert with Mausam on Harmonium and Hriday Buddhdev on Tabla. Shashwati comes from a family of musicians, with her maternal grandfather being employed in the court of Gwalior. She has studied khayal in the Gwalior style extensively with her mother, Smt. Kundal Mandal, and Pandit Balasaheb Poonchhwale; learning the nuances of tappa from the latter. In addition, Shashwati has studied thumri, dhrupad, ghazal, along with the repertoire of other gharanas such as Jaipur-Atrauli. She has received much acclaim as a performer and guru, boasting an international array of concerts and presentations, and has become one of the foremost exponents of tappa singing. Shashwati has been featured in some of the most prestigious festivals for Indian classical music including Sawai Gandharva Bhimsen Mahotsav (Pune), Darbar Festival (London), and ITC Sangeet Sammelan (Kolkata).
This program is presented by the Indian Classical Music Society of Vancouver (ICMSV) with the support of Zameen Art House.
