Sudanda Night
An evening of Sudanese music, poetry, rhythm, and community in the heart of Vancouver.
About the event
Sudanda brings a warm and powerful sound shaped by the musical traditions of Sudan, Nubia, rural Africa, and the Arabic world. Led by Vancouver based composer, singer, and Oud player Alaaeldin Abdalla, the group creates music that carries deep cultural roots while opening space for connection, reflection, and celebration.
Alaaeldin’s compositions draw on traditional Sudanese Arabic structure and the words of contemporary Sudanese poets. Together with Western instrumentation, Sudanda creates a rich sound tapestry that feels soulful, alive, and welcoming. The music moves between tenderness and rhythm, inviting the audience into a shared experience of culture, memory, and possibility.

About Sudanda
Sudanda was formed in 2004 from a meeting of Sudanese and Canadian musical voices. The band features the compositions of Alaaeldin Abdalla, who originally studied music at the High Institute of Music and Drama in Khartoum. After leaving Sudan during a time of violence, repression, and abuse of human rights, Alaaeldin continued his musical journey through Libya and Cairo before making Vancouver his home.
The music of Sudanda is carefully fused with the sounds of Earle Peach on acoustic guitar and vocals, Jane Kalmakoff on accordion and vocals, James Griffiths on trumpet, Riv Lai on bass, and Wesley Skakun on percussion. Together, they create a musical adventure that touches within and invites respectfulness through a unified sound.
