Today, August 15th- marks four years since Afghanistan’s dawn was shaded by darkness- Taliban invading the country and imposing a gender apartheid on girls and women. During these four years women in Afghanistan have been erased from society and stripped from their right to live. They are forced to cover their hair and face, denied their right to attend school and university, lost their jobs, forced into unwanted marriages, and forbidden to go out without a male guardian. Every school year dreams of millions of Afghan girls- 12 years and older are shattered as they are denied their birthright to learn and thrive, costing their liveliness, and physical and mental health.
Yet amidst the darkness, the powerful spirit of Afghan girls and women continues to remain free, resisting and fiercely fighting unbearable injustice. They embody freedom by refusing not to surrender in the most desperate circumstances. As their society and the world fails in protecting them, Afghan girls and women themselves have been taking lead in the fight for liberty. They courageously put their lives at risk- and find ways to raise their voices, educate and grow. By resisting oppression, injustice and patriarchy, both in the society and domestically, the brave women of Afghanistan are creating true freedom for their country.
The freedom of Afghanistan is rooted in the liberation and empowerment of these coragous girls and women who patiently plant the seeds of freedom in their beautiful hearts- soon blossoming in full bloom for themselves and their beloved homeland. Let’s stand in solidarity with the resilient light of Afghan girls and women as they rise against shadows of ignorance and oppression.
Join us next Saturday, August 23rd, at Zameen Art House for the unveiling of “Azadi” — a poetry art collection by Nargess Delia- inspired by women’s journey of freedom. In a world numbed by apathy and distraction “Azadi” is a call to witness, to reclaim silenced voices, and to honor the truth of those who dare to dream beyond darkness.
Come for an afternoon of connection, art, music and food as we stand in unity against oppression, and celebrate the courage of those who are leading a future where peace is born from freedom.
