Start Date

End Date
October 4 @ 9:30 pm

Transcendent Talas masterfully combines the talas (rhythm) and ragas (melody) of India with touches of jazz, featuring an ensemble of virtuosic instrumentalists and vocalists from India and Canada. Performing original compositions, Vedic mantras and arrangements of Indian classical repertoire, the ensemble takes the listener on a journey of outward ecstasy and inner contemplation.

Raman Kalyan is a globally acclaimed Carnatic flautist known for his soulful and expressive playing. A disciple of N. Ramani and in the lineage of the legendary T.R. Mahalingam, he blends tradition with innovation. Raman has performed worldwide, including at major jazz festivals and with iconic artists like K.J. Yesudas and Miles From India. He’s a composer, educator, and founder of CarnaticLessons.com, and was the first Indian flautist featured with the Oklahoma Symphony Orchestra.

Shruti Ramani is a Vancouver-based vocalist, composer, and educator blending Indian classical music with contemporary jazz. Trained under Dr. Ritu Johri of the Agra Gharana, she also earned a Jazz Studies degree from Capilano University. As the founder and bandleader of Raagaverse, her Juno-nominated Indo-jazz fusion ensemble, she has performed at several major Canadian festivals and collaborates internationally.

Dr. Curtis Andrews is a Canadian musician with global persuasions. A percussionist, composer, and collaborator whose music bridges South Indian, West African, and jazz traditions. A disciple of mridangam maestro Trichy Sankaran and Ewe master Kwasi Dunyo, he leads several ground-breaking ensembles in Canada and is dedicated to intercultural collaboration and community engagement through rhythm.

Dr. Jared Burrows has been an integral part of the jazz and improvised music scene in Vancouver for more than 30 years. He has performed with a who’s who of jazz stalwarts from Canada, the US and internationally and leads several groups with some of Vancouver’s top jazz players. Aside from performing, he has been an invaluable educator and has taught many of the new generations jazz musicians in Vancouver, being an instructor at Capilano University since 2008.
